THE WAY OF THE CROSS IN PROMINA

From 2014 the parish of St. Michael and the guardians of the Tomb of Christ traditionally organize the Way of the Cross in Promina on the 5th Sunday of Lent, Passion Sunday. The Way of the Cross begins in the Church of the Holy Spirit in Matasi village and ends in the Church of St Rocco in Čitluk village, whereas the churches and sacral sites along the way represent the stations of the Cross.

The distance from the initial to the final station of the Way of the Cross is a total of 27 km, and it takes about 12 hours to complete it. It includes five churches and numerous chapels and everyone can, in accordance with their abilities, reach certain stations.

This entire procession is accompanied by prayers and songs sung by the Promina people around the beginning of 19th century. These prayers and songs are preserved thanks to Fr. Ivan Maletić who printed the third edition prayer book called The Way of the Cross. The first printed prayer book The Way of the Cross was written by Fr. Ivan Vucić, the parish priest of Promina in 1802. His cousin Fr. Nikola Vucić had printed the second edition, which served as an exemplar for the third edition prayer book. It was translated into modern Croatian language by Branko Jozić.

This prayer book plays an important role in religion because it presents appropriate prayers performed by the faithful in a certain period of time, it is important for the study of the Croatian church language used for speaking and praying in the 19th century by the Christian regiment in Dalmatia, and it is also important for the study of patriotism by which the fidelity to God and the Homeland was expressed.
